• Postmenopausal women under age 65 who have 1 or more risk factors
• Postmenopausal women age 65 and older, regardless of additional risk factors
• Postmenopausal women who present with fractures
• Women who are considering therapy for osteoporosis
• Women who have been on HRT for prolonged periods
• Long-term glucocorticoid therapy (both men and women)
• Primary hyperparathyroidism (both men and women)
• Monitor efficacy of treatment (both men and women)
• Men who present for non-traumatic fractures

Medicare will only reimburse for bone densitometry tests under all such Indications For BMD Testing when they are ordered by the treating health care provider.

If you are uncertain about certain patients, please refer them to the “Osteoporosis clinic”. Frequency is every 1-2 years. The majority of BMD scans are paid for with proper documentation.
